Alessio left the suite taking all the air in it with him.

I wanted to keep screaming. As long as I was screaming, I could ignore the pounding in my head and my chest, but without it I had to focus on everything I had been running from ever since dropping that bag of trash outside of the restaurant.

My knees felt weak, my body starting to sag until I sank down into the couch. I could feel my heart still pounding in the back of my throat as I stared at the door.

Alessio was gone.

He hadn’t shot me.

Alessio knew that my father was a cop.

They were all facts that registered in random order, my brain moving sluggishly to try and catch up. They were all facts, and yet I wasn’t sure which of them mattered or which mattered most because my head was all turned around. My head had been all turned around for weeks now.

It was like, suddenly, everything that I had been trying to push down was now catching up with me, and I found myself, instead of sobbing and screaming while I fell apart, just sitting and staring at the closed door to Alessio’s suite.

I should leave.

I knew I should leave. I should grab what I could and hightail it the fuck out of there and go running to Detective Carter to try and get myself somewhere safe and far away.

It wasn’t even the desire to try and get Alessio arrested that kept me in place now, and I knew it. It was just my inability to move. I couldn’t stand. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t walk away.

Fuck, what the fuck was wrong with me?

My fingers shook as I turned off the “do not disturb” on my phone, watching the notifications light up my screen like New Year’s fireworks. Detective Carter obviously hadn’t stopped texting the entire time that he and his decisions had been blowing the cover that he’d forced me into.

Woodenly I opened the texts he had been sending me, and without reading any of them I pressed the call button and held the phone to my ear.

“About damn time,” he snarled as he picked up the phone. “I’ve been trying to reach you all goddamn day, Raine, you too busy fucking your mark?”

The disgust in his words barely registered with me, my eyes still staring at the door as I waited for him to take a breath.

“You almost got me killed today,” I answered in monotone.

“The fuck are you talking about?” he barked.

“Making Officer Ramirez meet me at the sushi stand, having him keep coming back, texting me off the hook like you have been. Alessio knows,” I muttered, unable to sound anything other than blank in response. “He knows that Officer Ramirez is a cop and he knows my dad was too . . .”

Detective Carter snorted. “No, he can’t. We washed Ramirez out of the system when he started working with us. If he knew, you’d be dead, not calling me.”

“He had a picture of him that he found through the department,” I answered, not understanding it myself.
